Update...chicks earn their keep!
It’s been a while, but the chicks are healthy and as of two weeks ago are laying eggs- very stunning eggs at that. They have been out of their hutch in the garden with our other chicken and seem to get on ok...time will tell!

A selection of the chick’s beautiful eggs!

The chicks not enjoying the snow....have you ever seen a chicken sledge...I rest my case!

A chick feeling happier in her warm (sheeps wool) insulated hutch. They even have a hot water bottle at night. It keeps them laying eggs in cold weather so someone told me....or was it a chicken!

End of term update...schools out for summer!
Couldn’t finish the school year without an update on the chicks. They have just moved into their new home (with an extension as they have got very big now!)

The chicks getting some sun whilst Goldie stretches her legs.

Hopefully the chicks should be laying eggs about September (just in time for the new school year!). True free range eggs are so tasty and very different than eggs from supermarkets- you must try them!

Chicks are ’clucking off’ for the summer- have a great holiiday.

Update of chicks growth

The chicks are enjoying their first taste of sweetcorn (which they liked very much) with ’Goldie’ leading by example- tuck in!
goldie tucks in whilst 2 chicks have a chat!

The chicks also go mad for grapes and have now moved from eating ’crumbs’ to ’growers pellets’- roll on ’layers pellets’!
Close up of one of the chicks

The chicks are now roosting (sleeping on a perch at night) and are very happy in their home- we do struggle to get them to bed at night...sounds familiar?

Photo of Chicks new home

As the weather is warmer (at last!) and the chicks are older, they can now live outside.
As you can see from the videos, they have had several cardboard houses (including Ed’s old rocket!) so it good that they can live somewhere nice...and we can get our house back!

9th June 2010 A Brief History
In case you weren’t aware, the children in the Foundation Stage (with some help from the teachers!) successfully hatched out some chicks from Eggs donated by Whirlow Farm. As we all know, things grow and these baby chicks needed a new home.
Ed Baxter in Class 1 (with permission from his parents!) kindly volunteered to home the 5 baby chicks. He already has 2 chickens of his own so another 5 won’t matter.
