INVESTORS IN PUPILS

You may hear your child talking about Investors in Pupils this year. We have successfully gained this exciting new award which is based around 5 key areas in school; attendance, classroom management, learning, behaviour and induction. The aim is to empower all pupils, increase their motivation and contribute to raising their achievement.

We started in September by making new class promises, which were made up by the children themselves. Zuhur then had a great idea to make a Welcome Book for her class which would introduce new children or teachers to the school. The children thought that this was such a good idea that every class made one!

Following this we have found out about the adults who work in school, the school budget, and the Governors. Hanga made a great film of the assembly where the Governors came to visit. The Governors were pleased that we had so many ideas for saving money by looking after our resources. Each class has a class target which they have decided upon themselves. They even get to choose the reward. Class 5 enjoyed their Pass the Parcel which was their reward for lining up well. Do ask your child what their own target is.

Eco Team

The Eco Team have been busy working towards The Green Flag Award this year. We are proud of the work we have done and are very pleased that the children at Hunter’s Bar Infant School take care in looking after the environment.  The Lord Mayor of Sheffield was so impressed that he asked if he could visit our school. He met the Eco Team and opened our new green wall. Every class has an eco monitor to switch off the lights to save energy. In Switch Off Fortnight we saved £34 by turning off lights and closing doors. Last term, the Eco Team were so impressed by the energy saving ideas they had seen at M&S that they asked Ms Hayes if we could put some into our school. She said ’Yes!’ and we now have thick roof insulation and energy saving lights and monitors throughout school. This will keep us warm and save money! Our next idea is to have a Green Day in school later this year.

We would like to thank the Garden and Nature Club and the Rubbish Busters for their hard work in keeping our school looking so good. The new Bin Club organised by Suroor is responsible for recycling our rubbish. They do such a good job that the School Council have agreed to buy more recycling bins! Our next step is to ’reduce and reuse’ before we ’recycle’.

Garden & Nature Club

Teams of highly enthusiastic gardeners, comprising of  Year 1 and  Year 2 children, helped a little by Mr Brearley and Mrs Murphy, are busy planting fruit and vegetables in the school garden.
May 2010
We were very lucky to have been invited to Nonna’s restaurant, who were involved in obtaining a  ’Mediterranean Rocket Garden’ for us. This came as a big parcel of baby plants.. lettuce, tomatoes, cabbages, kale, herbs, ooh, all sorts!  So, along with the sweetcorn, runner beans and  courgettes that we grew from seed ourselves, we are hoping for bumper crops.   Fingers crossed the slugs don’t get there first.

 July 2010
We won second prize in the Sheffield Biodervisity Awards for photographs of wildlife and flowers at school taken by Year 1 Garden & Nature Club children!
Miss Wiberg and Mrs Murphy took four children to Sheffield Hallam University to meet Sir Robert Winston, accept certificates and receive a prize of compost, bird food and feeder and seeds of plants that attract wildlife.

March 2011
THANK YOU!
To all the parents, carers and staff members who helped to collect Morrisons vouchers in the recent ’Let’s Grow’ scheme. Here are the useful things we were able to send for.

GREEN WALL

With huge thanks  to Waites and M&S!
The garden and nature club children and the Eco group were involved in planting up and installing our new green wall in the garden next to the tower. Do go and have a close look ( and smell, even a little nibble if you like!) at the selection of herbs generously given to us by the company that have made the slightly larger one at the new M&S store on Ecclesall road.
